I love summer. Even if the weather is dreadful, which it often is here in the UK, there is always an abundance of delicious locally grown vegetables and fruit. The saying, “we are what we eat” is absolutely true and many of the vegetables and fruit around at the moment are particularly good for the skin. And, with that in mind, I thought it might be interesting to list a few of my personal favourites together with their beneficial properties.
Tomatoes : Contain lycopene an anti-oxidant which has anti-ageing properties and also acts as a natural sunscreen. The inside pulp is acidic and helps to tighten the skin pores and prevent pimples.
Spinach : Another vegetable loaded with anti-oxidants eating spinach will help lessen the appearance of wrinkles, strengthen skin tissue and it contains anti-inflammatory properties which will flush out toxins leaving the skin looking clear and glowing!
Carrots : These should be top of your list to eat regularly! Carrots contain large amounts of beta carotene which once digested gets converted into Vitamin A. They will help keep your skin healthy, glowing and fight wrinkles.
Beetroot : Beetroot are rich in anthocyanins which are powerful anti-oxidants. Again, another vegetable that fights off wrinkles and helps to keep skin looking rosy and in good health.
Strawberries : These delicious summer berries are a natural whitening agent thanks to their high malic content. They also have high anti-oxidant levels that will help keep skin healthy.
Raspberries : Plentiful at this time of year and full of rutinosids that will help reduce any sun damage or inflammation of the skin.
Blackberries : These delicious hedgerow berries are seriously good for the skin. Not only do they contain Vitamins A and C but also offer higher levels of anti-oxidants than strawberries and, even more surprising, blueberries. Blackberries are comprised of more than 85% water with an abundant dose of fibre. Both of these are essential for a healthy-looking skin. The consumption of blackberries detoxifies the body and maintains the elasticity of the skin.
Apples : It won’t be long until our apples are ripe enough to eat and press to make juice. They contain a large amount Vitamin C which will keep skin firm and give it an inner radiance. Apples also stops free-radical damage which causes premature ageing in the skin.
Our skin plays a vital role in our outer appearance. To keep it looking glowing and healthy it is essential to have a daily supply of vital nutrients. I hope this list will help inspire you to eat more and let your skin reap the benefits!
